Originally Ifemelu and Obinze had this plan that Obinze would go to England after completing his graduation and Ifemelu took the responsibility to arrange for his visa. Things took a different turn when Ifemelu went to England. She increased the distance between herself and Obinze as she was ashamed to tell him the truth. After a long time Ifemelu got to know about Obinze from a friend and by then he was an illegal immigrant in America. He was a student with good grades but never got a good job or position in America. He was unable to get a visa which bothered him the most.
